With Police Being Murdered, This Powerful Video is More Appropriate Than Ever

by Jason DeWitt | Top Right News

The legendary Paul Harvey was beloved by Americans for nearly 50 years on radio.

But what many may not know is that Harvey lost his father when he was just three years old.

His father was a police officer,  who was shot and killed in the line of duty.

So Harvey knew all too well about the pain and loss that the children of the two slain NYPD cops felt, when he wrote a powerful newspaper column in 1970 called “What Are Policemen Made Of?”

Harvey then read the piece for his radio audience as “The Policeman.”

In the wake of yesterday’s horrible loss in New York City, it seems very appropriate to share Harvey’s words today:

“The Policeman”

A policeman is a composite of what all men are, mingling of a saint and sinner, dust and deity.

What that really means is that they are exceptional, they are unusual, they are not commonplace. Buried under the froth is the fact: and the fact is, less than one-half of one percent of policemen misfit the uniform. And that is a better average than you would find among clergymen!

What is a policeman? He, of all men, is at once the most needed and the most wanted. A strangely nameless creature who is “sir” to his face and “pig” or worse to his back.

He must be such a diplomat that he can settle differences between individuals so that each will think he won.

But…If the policeman is neat, he is conceited; If he’s careless, he’s a bum. If he’s pleasant, he’s a flirt; If he’s not, he’s a grouch.

He must make instant decisions which would require months for a lawyer.

But…if he hurries, he’s careless; If he’s deliberate, he’s lazy. He must be first to an accident, infallible with a diagnosis. He must be able to start breathing, stop bleeding, tie splints and above all, be sure the victim goes home without a limp.

The police officer must know every gun, draw on the run, and hit where it doesn’t hurt. He must be able to whip two men twice his size and half his age without damaging his uniform and without being “brutal.” If you hit him…he’s a coward. If he hits you…he’s a bully.

The policeman, from a single human hair, must be able to describe the crime, the weapon, the criminal and tell you where the criminal is hiding. But…if he catches the criminal, he’s lucky; if he doesn’t, he is a dunce.

He runs files and writes reports until his eyes ache, to build a case against some felon who will get “dealed out” by a shameless shamus.

The policeman must be a minister, a social worker, a diplomat, a tough guy and a gentleman.

And of course, he’ll have to be a genius…for he will have to feed a family on a policeman’s salary.

God bless Paul Harvey.

And may Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos rest in peace.

Where are the Paul Harvey’s in the U.S.A.? Al Sharpton are you listening..no, you wouldn’t because he does not fit into your agenda for racial divide.

Most graceful depiction……well said. They are the ONLY element between a civil society and complete anarchy. And every day we add illegal immigrants, thugs, drug addicts to the mix. None of us could go through the abuse they’re subjected to day in and day out. As members of society we failed the police officers, it’s starts at the very top. It’s time for Obama, Sharpton, Holder and ANY other political or law enforcement leader that ignited the flames and added fuel to hate mongers and mob mentality. It’s time to show the WORLD what we are made of. Pandering to the criminals must stop.

      so true.

        Our problems are just beginning.
        thank you Obama .

The next encounter you have with the police remember that you will set the tone. He/she is already expecting a harsh confrontation because that is what they usually receive. If you are pulled for a traffic violation they didn’t make you do it. If a violent crime is committed in your area they must determine that you are not the perpetrator. Every day they suit up to keep us all safe. Yes there are bad apples but not all.
Have respect for the ones that keep us safe.

  • The people who think that our law enforcement officers are all just out there hurting or killing people for $hi+s and giggles need to read this and realize that they are people too. They put their lives on the line to enforce our laws… laws that are there to keep order and civility in our society. They have every right to go home to their families at the end of their work day just like everyone else. It’s simple – when a cop stops you, treat him with respect and do what is asked of you and everyone will be able to breathe easy. If you feel that they’re being unfair, the place to fight them is in court.
