After 23 years driving the #24 car, NASCAR star Jeff Gordon is retiring. He made the shocking announcement via Twitter today:

A four-time series champion, Gordon is tied for third on the all-time wins list with 92 behind only Richard Petty (200) and David Pearson (105).

Now, of course, a talented driver with the affability and finesse of a Jeff Gordon isn’t going away. The 43-year-old Gordon says he’ll stay on with Hendrick Motorsports ‘for many years’ and will do some races, but his day-to-day driving is over after this season. His likely replacement on the Hendricks Motorsport team is expected to be Chase Elliott.
