Megan Bratten was shopping in a Kansas City, Missouri, Kmart when her minivan was stolen. A cell phone was still in the vehicle, so Bratten decided to take action and open the lines of communication.
Through texts, Bratten described her situation — a single mother of 5 who uses her van for work to provide for her children — and wouldn’t let up.
Three hours later, the thief responded with step by step instructions on where to retrieve the van, along with this message:
“I do feel bad. My kids needed a meal on the table so that’s what their dad did. Got them food. I know it’s wrong, but it’s been so hard since I lost my job.”
Bratten is very happy to have her van back. She didn’t call the cops, because she can relate to the struggle of needing provide for her family and, in the end, he did the right thing.
Doing the right thing is hard sometimes, especially when you are down and out. Hopefully this served as a wake-up call for this dad to persevere and do what it takes to provide for his kids – and make them proud at the same time.
