Vice President Joe Biden, in a speech to the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s 2014 Legislative Summit, on Thursday said the “11 million” illegal aliens in the United States “are already Americans.”
“Eleven million people living in the shadows I believe are already American citizens,” Biden said. “These people are just waiting, waiting for a chance to be able to contribute fully, and by that standard, 11 million undocumented aliens are already Americans in my view.”
Biden referenced former President Theodore Roosevelt’s 1894 speech titled “True Americanism.”
“Teddy Roosevelt said it better. He said, Americanism is not a question of birthplace or creed or a line of descent. It’s a question of principles, idealism and character,” Biden said, cherry-picking Roosevelt’s speech.
What Biden didn’t mention is that Roosevelt insisted that (LEGAL) immigrants assimilate — or get out:
“In the first place we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin.
But this is predicated upon the man’s becoming in very fact an American, and nothing but an American…There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag, which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any foreign flag of a nation to which we are hostile…We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language…and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”
How does that sentiment square with illegal alien students in California who put the Mexican flag above the American flag in a brazen act of anti-American defiance? (see below).
Above: Mexican students at Montibello (CA) High rip down the American flag, turn it upside down, and put it back with the Mexican flag above it, in a pro-amnesty “protest” in 2006
Roosevelt also told the Kansas City Star:
“Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or to leave the country. English should be the only language taught or used in the public schools.”
How does that sentiment square with a Texas teacher fired for telling Mexican-“American” students to stop insulting other students in Spanish in the classroom? Or an Arizona nursing student called a “racist” for requesting that classes be taught in English?
Biden should be ashamed of himself for perverting Teddy Roosevelt’s words, and disgracing his own oath to uphold our nation’s laws by recognizing foreign national lawbreakers as citizens.
But of course Joe has no shame.
