8-Year Old Scores Awesome Touchdown – So Why Was His Team Fined $500 and His Coach Suspended?

Above: Young Elijah has his triumph crushed by liberal idiots

Parents used to roll their eyes or laugh when they saw their child receive a “participation trophy” for a school competition they lost.

But it is no laughing matter. Over time, Progressive school administrators have destroyed the concept of friendly competition in our schools: degrading the achievements of winners and nullifying the important lessons of losing.

“Everyone’s a winner!” our kids are told. It’s the academic version of Marxist “collectivism”.

Now they are taking it to the extreme in athletics as well, as we see in the example of a peewee football team from Syracuse, NY that was fined $500 and had their coach suspended for a week for scoring too many points.

Yes, you heard right. They punished the kids for being too good.

As the Post Standard reported:

Eight-year-old Elijah Burrell had just intercepted a pass late in the game and did what came naturally.

The kid in the #2 jersey tucked in the pigskin and headed for the end zone. Touchdown! Elijah’s first one ever.

Except there was one big — and expensive — problem with the otherwise happy moment.

His undefeated Lawrenceville Black Knights were ahead 32-0 in the fourth quarter — and Elijah’s interception return for a touchdown eclipsed the peewee league’s 33-point mercy rule, WGCL-TV in Atlanta reported.

The penalty? A $500 fine. But not only that: The Knights’ coach earned a weeklong suspension.

Elijah’s mother, Brooke Burdett, said her son was “beyond excited” in the moment and wasn’t thinking about the mercy rule.

“He had no idea,” she told WGCL. “This is his first year. This was his first touchdown. He is an 8-year-old boy making a pick-six.”

Burdett said the team would have accepted a $100 fine but the $500 penalty and the coach’s suspension is excessive, particularly because her son wasn’t trying to run up the score. In fact, she said, the Knights tried to let the other team score on the next play but the other squad refused to catch the ball.

Of course they did. Why would kids with any self-respect willingly accept the football equivalent of welfare?

And how sad is it that after her son’s first touchdown ever, instead of celebrating his achievement, Mrs. Burdett felt the need to apologize for her child’s score, and explaining how he didn’t know about this insanely unfair “rule”? Heartbreaking.

But this is what happens when far-left ideology is permitted to take hold. It crushes the spirits of children. At first. Then slowly they come to expect that excelling at something should not be their goal, but rather the fulfillment of the “community”. They start to feel guilty for being exceptional at something, like it is almost a crime.

This drives down the ambitions of the young. Why try harder if you will only be punished for scoring “too many” points, for making “too much” money? Progressives tell our children it’s simply “not fair” for them to have more, or be better than the next child.

And we can see it right at the top of the political food chain.

So long as we elect “leaders” such the the one below who promote the idea that those who achieve something don’t deserve it, we will never be rid of this sick mentality…

Obama: “I do think at a certain point youve made enough money.”

What they did to young Elijah, his family, his team and coach is wrong. It is disgusting. And it is un-American.
